Two West Sussex men are being stripped of criminal profits, having already been sent to prison.

Jamie Gordon, 44, of Grinstead Lane, Lancing, who had been sentenced in February this year to five years imprisonment at Chichester Crown Court, after pleading guilty to supplying amphetamine, possession of cocaine with intent to supply, and possession of criminal property, faced a Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) confiscation hearing on Wednesday 16 May at the same court. His total benefit from crime was found to be £150,745.50, so £39,400.00 in cash seized from him on his arrest, and his vehicle, will be confiscated.

Clark Tribe, 29, of no fixed address, also sentenced in February to three years imprisonment after pleading guilty to supplying cocaine and amphetamine and possession of criminal property, had been given a POCA confiscation order for £1,100.00 at the same court on 2 February. His total benefit from crime was found to be £9,126.00.

The two sentences and the confiscation hearings all stemmed from an alert Sussex Roads Policing officer who spotted Gordon and Tribe acting suspiciously in the car park at Shoreham Airport on 8 March last year. It swiftly became clear that he was witnessing a drugs deal and he raised the alarm. The men fled in two vehicles, one of which was stopped after a short pursuit on the A259 towards Brighton, and the other one was found in Worthing

Tribe was found to be in possession of a large quantity of Amphetamine and Cocaine with a street value of almost £13,000. A search of Gordon's vehicle and two addresses connected to him turned up large amounts of cocaine, and amphetamine with a potential street value of almost £190,000.00. A total of £39,400 in cash was also found in Gordon's van.

Detective Inspector of the Sussex Police Economic Crime Unit said;

"Thanks to the alertness of the officer, the swift response of colleagues and the expert work of one of our financial investigators, two drug dealers have been brought to justice and are paying for their crime by losing their liberty and finances."

Newsdesk Notes;

The money is now confiscated by the courts and goes to the central Government exchequer, but 50% of it then comes back to law enforcement. Of that 50%, one third goes to the Crown Prosecution Service, one third to HM Courts System and one third to police. The money that comes back to Sussex Police is used to help support the work of the force's financial investigators, to fund searches on national commercial and statutory databases, for example the Land Registry and Companies House, and as donations to local Sussex-based crime reduction and diversion projects.

17 May 2012

Thirty-six drivers have been stopped and issued with Fixed Penalty Notices for mobile phone or seatbelt offences in a road safety awareness operation in Worthing.

Officers from the force Roads Policing Unit, Worthing Neighbourhood Policing Team, and the Vehicle Operator Standards Agency (VOSA) took part in the initiative, one of a series known as Operation Airwalk Enforcement.

The operation was carried out on the A27 at the Charmandean Centre during Tuesday 15 May.

PCSO Ed Mitchell from the Worthing Neighbourhood Policing Team said; "The operation is principally aimed at educating drivers using mobile phones and both drivers and passengers found not wearing seat belts.

"However, in addition, a scaffolding lorry travelling from Lewes to Hampshire was found to be clearly overweight. When stopped by officers its mudguards were almost scrapping the ground. When escorted to a weighbridge the 3500 kilo vehicle was weighed to be 51% over weight. The condition of this vehicle was extremely dangerous, affecting not only the handling of the lorry but also its braking distance. After the lorry was weighed the driver was told to unload 1500 kilos of weight before being told he would be summonsed to court as this breach was too serious for a Fixed Penalty Notice.

"Also, a minibus was stopped while driving to pick up some school children, and was given an immediate prohibition notice by VOSA officers, as the sliding door of the vehicle would not close properly, potentially causing it to open while in transit."

This joint operation is conducted frequently on roads in Sussex.

If you wish to report road related issues, Operation Crackdown is a free on-line service where the public can identify dangerous road users, report drivers for mobile phone use or no seat belt and report offences such as untaxed and abandoned vehicles. All reports submitted are processed by the Road Policing Unit.

17 May 2012

As towns and communities across the UK begin the countdown to welcoming the Torch Relay through their streets, the Metropolitan Police Service's (MPS) specialist Torch Security Team (TST) is in its final days of preparation ahead of the torch being brought into the UK on Friday, 18 May. For the TST team, known as "the runners," next week brings to an end, 18 months of grueling training and final preparations to embark on what will be a unique role in British policing. The runners are one element of the wider torch security team, which includes motorcyclists, pedal cyclists, senior officers and operational planners, who will ensure the integrity, safety and security of the Olympic and Paralympic Flames, plus the immediate protection of the Torch Bearer holding that flame.

Working as part of a team of who will travel with the Olympic Flame, from the moment it leaves Lands End until it arrives at the Olympic Stadium for the Opening Ceremony, is PC Simone Gibson. PC Gibson, aged 50, has been a serving officer for 18 years, and is currently an officer within the Safer Transport Command. She was chosen to take on this challenge from an initial 664 applicants and following an eight month selection process.

Prior to becoming a police officer Simone was a flight attendant and a theatre nurse for 14 years. Simone will be policing various legs of the relay and is hoping to run through either her current home county of West Sussex or through Camberwell, London where she is originally from. Numerous hours have gone into preparing for the role, and outside of work Simone has continued to maintain her own training both mentally and physically by walking, doing gym classes, meditating and running for her local running club.

In addition to this Simone is also a volunteer with the RSPCA, where once a week she walks the dogs, which she finds very therapeutic and contributes to her weekly work out. She thoroughly enjoys running and this is what led her to apply to be a part of the TST. Simone is a former member of the Brighton and Hove women's running club and has also taken part inseveralBritish Military Fitness runs. Simone's friends and family are very excited that she has been chosen to escort the torch around the country and she is hoping that her mum especially will be able to catch a glimpse of her on TV. PC

Simone Gibson said:

"I applied to be a part of the TST as running is my hobby and my passion. I enjoy meeting new people and I am really looking forward to meeting some of the 8000 torchbearers who have been chosen. This is a completely different role to my day to day job and I'm still pinching myself that I will be a part of something so spectacular."

PC Michael Smith

Working as part of a team of who will travel with the Olympic Flame, from the moment it leaves Lands End until it arrives at the Olympic Stadium for the Opening Ceremony, is PC Michael Smith.

PC Smith aged 49 years, has most recently served as a public order instructor and has served with the MPS since 1982 in a variety of roles including the Territorial Support Group (TSG) and the Mounted Branch based at Great Scotland Yard- riding now retired police horse 'Saffron'. Michael or 'Mick' as he is known to his colleagues was chosen to take on this challenge from an initial 664 applicants and following an eight month selection process.

Originally from West Sussex, Mick will be policing every fourth day of the Relay and is particularly looking forward to running through Brighton as this is not too far from his home town.

Numerous hours have gone into preparing for the role but outside of work Mick has been preparing putting in many hours pounding the pavements and cycling.

Living by the sea has its benefits as Mick is a keen windsurfer and he spends a lot of his time surfing the West Sussex coast, an activity alongside football and rugby he has enjoyed for a number of years.

Once the Games begin Mick is looking forward to watching the windsurfing and has high hopes for Beijing bronze medalist Bryony Shaw.

Constable Michael Smith said:

"The Olympics are a great opportunity for people to experience all manner of sports. It will give exposure to some of the more obscure sports such as windsurfing and hopefully the exposure it will gain will propel it into the limelight and will be successful as other sports such as cycling and swimming. You never know- the 2012 games just might build a legacy for some of the more unknown sports".
